History of Orihuela and Orihuela Costa

Semana Santa Museum in Orihuela

The city of Orihuela and its surrounding area is home to many historic places to visit, works of art to view and many colourful fiestas to enjoy marking the city and areas importance in the eyes of the church, especially the Semana Santa, Easter, parades and fiestas. Apart from being its own province at one time, Orihuela has been part of both the Murcia and Alicante province over its many historical years. It was in 1833 that it became part of the Alicante Province to which it still remains today.

Walking through Orihuela itself you find many parts from the medieval periods which are looking tired and in need of restoration.

The city has many sites to visit with one being the Miguel Hernandez museum. Born in Orihuela, Hernandez was a famous Spanish poet imprisoned during the Civil War for his anti-fascist views. He died in 1942 and a museum built in his memory. There are several cathedrals worth visiting with the first stop being the Cathedral of Salvador and Santa Maria dating back to the 13th century. Across from the cathedral is the Sacred Art museum where you can view paintings by Velazquez and sculptures by Francisco Salzillo and Nicolas de Bussy.

Another interesting site is the famous Diablesa statue which is centre stage during the holy week parades. It is a winged devil with horns and breast and is the only demon to take part of the parades. Nicolas de Bussy created the statue in the late 17th century. Along from the Town Hall is the Santiago Apostol church on Calle Santiago. Its ornate carvings and puzzling owl carving are interesting to viewers. One last stop is the Lady of Mercy church in the town centre. The city is also home to the oldest clock in the Valencian community dating back to the 15th century.

Orihulea has many years of history and over time has transpired into a modern city as well. In the 1960's the coastal areas became prominent with tourism and local areas being created such as Playa Flamenca, Cabo Roig, Campoamor and Villamartin. The influx of ex-pats has increased the population for the Orihuela area to over 100,000. In fact there are more British people living in the municipality than any other area of Spain. The Orihuela Costa has more British tourist annually than any other area of Spain also.
