Guadalest or, to give it its full title, el Castell de Guadalest, is a small but pretty tourist town located in the Marina Baixa mountains in the province of Alicante some 21 kilometres inland from Benidorm along the CV-70 and CV-755 roads.

The main attractions of the town are the remains of the 11th-century San Jose castle and the stunning views the town provides over the valley's reservoir and surrounding peaks. But there is more to the town than the fortress ruins and views, with many historical and cultural museums throughout the town, including the classic style and furniture of the Ordena House museum, a nativity scene and toy museum, a museum of historic motorcycles, museums with microminiature scenes and a collection of over 20,000 salt and pepper shakers from all over the world, some dating back to the 1800s.

The town is an ideal base for hiking through the hills, with popular trails leading to the nearby peaks and a signed route to the village of Castell de Castells, about 13 kilometers away. For those feeling less energetic, the town also has some fabulous restaurants and cafes from which to enjoy the views, several quaint arts and crafts shops, and a few hotels and guest houses for overnight stays.
